The long cold polar night is not only dark but sometimes suddenly full of colorful surprises. Sometimes aurora borealis dances around and shows its colors splendor. At other times however only the stars twinkle and the milky way wants to seduce us to follow its path.
Arctic foxes, lynxes and wolves lie curled up in the night, while a herd of reindeer huddles together, quietly chewing the cud. Bears sleep their winter sleep, while the pine trees hide under a thick white blanket.
And when the sun bends its rays with difficulty over the horizon, it radiates a rainbow of color into the sky in all its splendor.
On other days everything is grey and dull and the wind and snow are whistling around our ears. Ice crystals conjure up geometric shapes that amaze us.
A crackling fire brings warmth and light to the encompassing darkness and has been our faithful companion since time immemorial, whose presence shaped us. Where would we have been in that dark night without a companion fire beside us?
In the coming months I will make a pact with the fire that smolders within me and let it flare up and shine in that dark winter night. The ice crystals, the cold and the bright light of the sun, moon and stars will nourish me and support me until spring claims its share.
